For the entrepreneur, anger can be a powerful business tool when wielded correctly. It can point to areas of friction that need improvement and underline their solutions. But it is not always easy to determine how anger can be used in an appropriate and effective manner. 

To paraphrase a quote from the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, ‘becoming angry is easy – but to become angry with the right person, at the right time, for the right reason, and in the right way – that is more difficult.’ As a business tool for the entrepreneur, the right way to be angry involves using anger as a map. One that will help you find the underlying causes of those angers in the first place.

It is important to recognize that anger or workplace frustration is a signal for desired change. In other words, your anger or workplace frustration has a cause. And in most cases that cause can be identified if you properly leverage your anger towards finding a solution. If you are able to look at the cause of your anger critically, you become more aware of why you are angry at all – and what could be done to alleviate the issue. However this is often easier said than done, as it requires you to balance both your emotion and critical thought, all while using frustration as your map towards the core of the problem. 

Embrace Workplace Frustration to Find Solutions

Any anger or frustration that you may experience as an entrepreneur can certainly help you find solutions to your own immediate problems. But anger expressed by customers, employees, partners, or co-workers can also be indicative of a problem, and it can help direct you towards a solution. 

As a business tool, anger serves to find the solution by first locating the problem. If a customer or a client has a frustration with a certain aspect of your business, it is worth listening to their issue and finding the source of their frustration. Once the source of their frustration has been identified, a solution can be more easily prepared. In general, anger or frustration with any aspect of an entrepreneur’s business should not be ignored. It points to an underlying issue that may also be affecting others, albeit more silently.

Look for Anger and Frustration Where it May Go Unnoticed

Entrepreneurs should consider the possibility that some anger and frustration may exist in their business, but it goes largely unnoticed. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and some customer ails may be overlooked due to their silent nature. Being able to look past anger to find underlying issues is an important trait for entrepreneurs to have, but being able to see anger and frustration where it is less obvious is equally as important. 

Wielding anger as a business tool is a difficult task, and failure is an acceptable part of the learning process. The key to succeeding in using anger as a business tool is to learn from past failures and approaching issues pragmatically. If you approach any anger you experience with critical awareness and emotional control, you are already well along the pathway to finding a solution.
