Have you ever felt like you’ve set your life to “auto-pilot”? Maybe you feel as though you’re coasting through life, with little control or self-motivation to complete tasks or chase your dreams. More often than not, it’s your habits that are to blame. In order to become the person you truly want to be, you must understand how to get your habits in check.
Your Habits Are Molding You
Some people tend to believe that their habits are ingrained in them from a young age, much like their personality. However habits tend to be created based more solely on context than personality. For example, you may believe that you can’t get that promotion because you don’t have the willpower to complete the training course. In reality, the context, or your environment, is actually what is holding you back. It’s possible that you surround yourself with negative people who’ve made you believe you aren’t capable of completing a course.
Whatever the case, it is possible to change your habits to shape your future self into the person you want to be. You can rid yourself of any undesirable and repetitious actions that are inhibiting you from becoming the person you truly want to be. The best approach to changing habits is to start small.
Starting Small
Becoming the person you want to be is made in your daily habits, not some groundbreaking miracle moment. The secret to success is moulding and shaping your daily habits to better yourself in the long run.
It’s natural to want to make big changes that remarkably change your life in the shortest amount of time. Unfortunately, habits don’t just change overnight. However, habits can be formed and manipulated to help you live your desired life; habits don’t have to hold you back.
It’s best to start small. If you would like to become a morning person so you can get more done in the day, start by setting your alarm 10 minutes earlier. Moreover, if you tend to sleep in, you could try only pressing the snooze button once and forcing yourself to get up. In small doses, you’re able to slowly change your habits which will slowly allow yourself to become a better version of yourself.
“Habits are powerful, but delicate. They can emerge outside our consciousness, or can be deliberately designed. They often occur without our permission, but can be reshaped by fiddling with their parts. They shape our lives far more than we realize – they are so strong, in fact, that they cause our brains to cling to them at the exclusion of all else, including common sense.” -Charles Duhigg
